This big-boned Merlot opens with glossy red berry fruit beneath a thick sheen of vanillin oak. There's a cool, herbal edge and a slight mustiness. The palate is equally heavyset, although it's saved by some refreshing acidity. There's a touch of alcohol heat and plenty of oaky tannins that dry out the mouth at the finish. Nevertheless, the fruit makes its way through the cracks. Christina Pickard
