De Bortoli 2017 Old Boys 21 Barrel Aged Tawny Port (New South Wales)

Fortified wines are an important part of Australia's wine history, and Tawny has always led the way. This equally historic winery is able to tap into old wine reserves for blending, making this an average of 21 years old. The result is wine of heady, complex aromas like dried figs and apricots, leather bound books, milky coffee, and caramel with herbal, green peppercorn undertones. The heat from the alcohol hits the mouth rather forcefully at first sip, but it is then enveloped in a sweet, viscous cloak. This could further mature in the bottle, but it's drinking well now.
