This ale is brewed with Pinot Noir must and aged in French oak barrels, giving it a definitively vinous character in its tart red fruit and wood-spice aromas and flavors. It's a beautiful mahogany color in the glass, with glimmers of amber in the light and a small tan head that falls fast. There's a pervasive sour and acidic streak throughout, enlivening the rich notes of raisin, caramel, chocolate and baking spice. Final notes of bittersweet cocoa and lightly toasted oak dance on the long yet graceful finish. It's a beer that brings together wine and beer lovers alike. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
