Domaine de Lumian 2015 Red (Côtes du Rhône Villages Valréas)

Shavings of roasted chestnut, leather and crushed peppercorn lend savory nuance to piercing black cherry and plum in this silky, complex Grenache-Syrah blend (augmented by small proportions of Carignan and Mourvèdre). Tasted in summer 2021, it's not a youthful, jammy fruit bomb, but rather, a harmony of fruit against a backdrop of earth, animal and umami elements. Soft in tannin and freshly balanced, it's lovely now but should hold through 2025 at least. Anna Lee C. Iijima
