Domaine Marcel Deiss 2002 Schoenenbourg Grand Cru White (Alsace)

Deiss's top wines are blends of different grape varieties that he feel best express their individual terroirs and vintages. The 2002 Schoenenbourg is intensely mineral and citrusy on the nose, verging on quince-like, but turns out to be rather sweet and a bit soft on the palate, where ripe apple and pear flavors are balanced by dry-mineral notes. A slightly bitter edge creeps in on the finish, which dampened my enthusiasm somewhat for this wine. Joe Czerwinski
