Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier 2015 Lieu-Dit Malakoff Shiraz (Pyrenees)

This vintage of Malakoff is highly vegetal and spicy but in a slightly odd way, at least at first. After time in glass, it settles into itself, revealing notes of roasted parsnips, flower stems, black pepper and a lick of coffee-scented oak. The palate is more cohesive, with savory spicy elements at the fore. Muscular without being heavy, the chalky, somewhat oaky tannins firmly grip the tongue and the finish is a little bitter. Drink now, with pan roasted root vegetables or cellar until 2027. Christina Pickard
