E. Guigal 2016 Hermitage

Penetrating and finessed, this 100% Syrah highlights ripe yet cutting blackberry and cherry flavors against a firm backdrop of graphite and crushed stone. Matured 36 months in oak barrels (50% new), it offers lavish tobacco-leaf and licorice notes that integrate neatly into the palate. Silkier in tannins than the 2015 vintage, the wine is approachable now but should improve well through 2035. Anna Lee C. Iijima
