Edgebaston 2017 Cape Winemakers Guild Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon (Stellenbosch)

Winemaker: David Finlayson. This Cabernet Sauvignon, with 5% Cabernet Franc, leads with an intense nose of blackcurrant leaf, cassis, mentholated herbs, black cherry and plum skin. It smells rich and lightly roasty, with some coffee and cocoa nib accents. The palate is smooth and sultry, with lush and ripe black-fruit tones that are hit by a strong dose of whole baking spice and supported by framing tannins that lend texture and grip through the spicy close. Ample acidity keeps it all in check, while the finish evolves from black fruit skin to toasty oak spice before landing on more fruit-skin flavors. Drink 2025–2035. Lauren Buzzeo
