Ferngrove 2017 Independence Shiraz (Great Southern)

This wine is labeled as a Shiraz with “a touch of Pinot Noir,” but with a 63% to 37% ratio, the Pinot is fairly prominent. From the southwest corner of Oz in the Frankland River, cool-climate characteristics abound. There's bright fleshy raspberry and plum fruit on the nose, with mocha, peppercorn, spicy oak and an underlying meatiness. Medium bodied, the tannins are dusty and a little astringent but plump juicy fruit abounds, along with a glycerin-like texture and a savory, herbal finish. Christina Pickard
