First Drop 2015 Fat of the Land Ebenezer Vineyard Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

Housed in a wrist-achingly heavy bottle, this premium Shiraz is one of three under this label, each from a separate Barossa subregion. The Ebenezer vineyard grows in deep red clays at around 970 feet above sea level. Upfront dark berry fruit leads the nose, but unfortunately it's somewhat lost in a lot of sweet, vanilla and chocolate streaked oak aromas. The oak is equally prominent on the palate, and while the fruit feels refreshingly lean and crunchy, the lack of weight and creaminess in the texture only emphasizes the overt barrel flavors.
