Even though this wine starts out weaker than it finishes, the whole package is really nice. Some earthy, stewed-fruit aromas lead into a broad and spicy black-fruit palate. Well-applied wood tones add character to the finish. And the balance seems spot on. While it's firm and tight, you don't get hit with hard tannins or overt oak. In a word, it's balanced. —M.S.
