88pointsGeyer 2017 Seaside Cabernet Franc (Barossa Valley)

A single-variety bottling of Cab Franc isn't a common sighting in the Barossa, yet this small batch, minimal intervention, hazy-cherry-hued wine shows tons of varietal character even in this sun-soaked region. The nose is unmistakably CF, with heady notes of cherries, strawberries, green stalks, black olives, bitter herbal tonic and lots of savory undertones. As promising as the nose is, the palate is less cohesive. The crunchy red-fruit-spice-and-stalks combo is there in full force but the tannins are angular and a little bitter. Nevertheless, this is worth trying for the novelty factor alone. Christina Pickard
