Giesen 2019 Uncharted Pinot Noir (Marlborough)

This new range from Giesen aims for more site expression from its Awatere Valley vineyards. This Pinot needs a little air but soon reveals brambly red and black berries, sap, dried Mediterranean herbs and a meaty, umami backbone. The palate is on the fuller side of the spectrum, and a bit austere, but the layers of fruit, herbs and spices are still there, wound neatly together by gravelly tannins. Christina Pickard
