Hagafen 2003 Estate Syrah (Napa Valley)

This is an elegant wine, not without its faults, but it benefits from a smooth, plush mouthfeel. The berry-cherry fruit is complexed with various earthy elements, like dried leather, coffee, licorice and a spicy, sweet-and-sour tang that calls to mind tabasco. Best now–2007 for its freshness.
