Hans Family Estate 2014 Spirit of Marlborough Red (Marlborough)

Editors' Choice

Marlborough's cool climes aren't known for Bordeaux varieties, yet Hans and Therese Herzog demonstrate their viability in the region. Lighter than most Bordeaux-style blends, this translucent, cherry-hued wine opens with bright red berry, flower stalk, mocha and savory, olive-like aromas. Solidly medium bodied, there's a crunch of fruit and lively acidity in the mouth. The tannins are beautifully structured—taut, fine and powdery. The oak is tucked well into the background and the finish is long, juicy and herb flecked. Christina Pickard
