Hans Family Estate 2017 Chardonnay (Marlborough)

This is an exceptional, Old World-style Chardonnay of depth and beauty from one of New Zealand's most intriguing winegrowers. From the Herzog family's organically farmed vines, this deep-gold Chard is rich and evocative, like the air after a summer rainstorm (think wet hay, fresh herbs, papaya and honeyed pear). The opulence of the palate—texturally like melted caramel—is offset by flickers of salty minerals. The oak is present but supportive. An intense, complex wine that should age gorgeously until 2035 at least. Christina Pickard
