Despite the historic significance of Hardy's Tintara, this particular bottling favors power over a sense of place or character. It falls within a rather generic “big red wine” category, offering aromas of ripe plum and red cherry with hefty helpings of cracked pepper, licorice, bay leaf and savory spices. Despite its muscular nature, there's still freshness on the palate. Tannins are dusty and chiseled, finishing on the astringent side. This needs protein—and a lot of it. Christina Pickard
