Hélène Garcin 2002 Poesia Red (Mendoza)

Get by the opening notes of leather, bitter root and horseradish and what lies beneath is a top-notch Malbec-Cab Sauvignon blend that shows tons of old-vines boysenberry and cassis character. It's a bit juicy and exacting on the palate, but it's also cleansing and will never be confused for fat and misguided. A true Argentine high flier, yet the newer vintages ('03, '04 and '05) are even better. Michael Schachner
