Henschke 2017 Johann's Garden G-S-M (Barossa Valley)

This GSM (which contains 76% Grenache) is painted with the distinctive brushstrokes of the historic winery. Finessed, precise, even filigree, it's initially shy. Gentle aromas of cherry, plum, florals, baking spice and a slight savory note float from the glass. The palate is full but with elegance, and an interesting way of unfolding on the tongue. First, the silky, tangy fruit. The tannins creep in towards the end, with lovely texture and grip. The finish is on the short side. Not Henschke's most memorable wine but a solid and age worthy bottling nonetheless. Drink until 2030. Christina Pickard
