Somewhat closed and synthetic-feeling at first, this wine does open some, but it takes a lot of swirling in the glass. It offers subtle red and black fruit, spicy oak, pencil lead and menthol aromas. The palate is more generous, with a burst of juicy ripe fruit and muscular tannins, but overall this lacks the character of the varietals and place and falls on the flat and oaky side. All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
