89pointsInnocent Bystander 2017 Syrah (Yarra Valley)

This starts out cloaked in reduction and mealy oak. The cabbagy character blows off relatively quickly with time in a glass, although the oatmeal-like oak sticks around. Nevertheless, there's an abundance of brambly red fruit, floral and spice notes. The palate offers fleshy fruit and a lovely chalky texture amid raspy tannins and lifted acidity. It's a little biting at the finish, but the cool climate winemaking can be felt throughout. Christina Pickard
