Jim Barry 2017 Lodge Hill Shiraz (Clare Valley)

There's lovely spice and purity of fruit on this great value sipper from a long-standing Clare Valley estate. You do need patience, though. After time in glass or decanter, the earthy, barnyard notes blow off, replaced by plums, mint, dried florals and warm pavement. There's power on the palate and chalky, taut tannins but there's restraint and freshness amidst silky fruit and winter warming spice. Christina Pickard
