Jim Barry 2017 LoosenBarry Wolta Wolta Dry Riesling (Clare Valley)

This is a collaboration between the Barry family and German producer Ernst Loosen. As such, German winemaking techniques like the use of 3,000-liter casks, native yeast fermentation and extended time on the lees have been implemented, resulting in rounder, more textural Riesling than the Barrys's other bottlings. Light honey-hued, it's initially quite reductive but as it receives air, shows lime, honeycomb and orchard blossom aromas. There's shrill acidity on the palate but lovely texture and a mineral note that underpins the lingering fruit and floral characters. Still very young, this could unfold beautifully with time in the cellar. Christina Pickard
