Julien Schaal 2017 Altenberg de Bergheim Grand Cru White (Alsace)

The ethereal lift of dried lemon peel on the nose is followed by lemon-tempered mellowness of ripe pear, ripe peach and golden Mirabelles on the palate. This is honed and lifted, slightly sweet but balanced by the glistening freshness of that pervasive lemon. A field blend of Riesling and Gewurztraminer, this is a wonderful synthesis of sunshine, soil and grape. The finish is off dry and subtle. It is lovely now but sure to evolve. Anne Krebiehl MW
