Kay Brothers 2017 Basket Pressed Amery Vineyard Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

Despite being a lower tiered wine of this historic estate, this is actually one of its stronger Shiraz offerings this vintage, thanks in part to a lighter-handed oak regime. The nose offers tangy red and black berries, cola, black licorice and peppery spice. The palate is rich and toasty but balanced. Granular, savory tannins are powerful, and the oak gets a touch bitter at the finish, but there's a nice lift of acidity, and the fruit is silky and plush. Christina Pickard
