This is the relatively new label of Stephen Pannell, a well-respected name in Aussie wine. Made from the fruit of self-owned vineyards on staggeringly old soils, the wine takes a little time in glass to open up. Once it does, it reveals a deep well of flavor, from plump plum and blackberry to forest floor, mocha, violets, savory spice and porcini mushroom powder. It's full figured, with a plush, silky mouthfeel and solid framework of taut, textural tannins. The lifted perfume and structure makes it a less dense bottling than some of its regional counterparts. Drink now–2030. Christina Pickard

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
