This rich, ripe and bold Shiraz feels more like a meal than a drink. Semiconfected yet bright berry fruit on the nose is countered by flower stalks, white pepper, savory herb and toasty oak. It shows a touch of bottle age, too. The palate is plush but not without freshness, while tannins are big, blocky and drying. This could cellar a few more years but isn't likely to offer the excitement of others at this price point. Christina Pickard

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
