Living Roots 2018 Blackwoods Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

This is a Vegemite wine, as the Aussies say, meaning you'll love it or you won't. Either way, you can't deny it has personality. It's inky hued, and the nose is an odd yet not unappealing combo of oatmeal, ripe fruit, licorice, mocha, mint and green, flower stalk notes. There's a rawness to it, like the smell of the winery at crush time. The palate is equally stripped back. It's full bodied and granular in texture, with muscular, sappy tannins. Pays homage to the boldness of this famed South Aussie style without all the makeup. Christina Pickard
