Manor Estate 2013 Limited Reserve Shiraz (McLaren Vale)

This six-year-old Shiraz from McLaren Vale is aging rapidly. Fading, brick red in color, it actually smells like crushed up brick dust, along with cooked strawberries and blueberries, dried roses, stalks and some vanillin oak notes. While the fruit is still tangy, it's lost freshness. Wrapped in a shawl of granular tannins and somewhat bitter, soapy oak notes, particularly at the finish, this has some “old wine” appeal, but really it's past its peak. Christina Pickard
