Black in color, with foresty aromas of smoke and leaves. Unfortunately there's also some murky aromas and a hint of cheese. The palate has basic berries and oak, while the finish is overtly woody, with a note of strawberry. The wine has its good points, namely spice and heft. But it's also off the mark in a few areas, namely the confusing nose and a heavy dose of vanilla. —M.S.
