McGuigan 2013 The Philosophy Cabernet Sauvignon-Shiraz (South Eastern Australia)

Housed within an extremely heavy bottle, this blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz offers heaps of richness and power despite some bottle age. It oozes plump red and black berries, chocolate, vanilla and vague herbal and earth nuances. It's just starting to hint at maturity by showing a little volatility. The palate is all about power although time is beginning to soften things. While the berry fruit is there, it's fading and is wrestling with chunky, drying tannins. Oak influence shows on the finish. This may cellar for another few years, but it's questionable whether the fruit will hold up. Christina Pickard
