Mönchhof 2017 Mosel Slate Spätlese Riesling (Mosel)

Initially quite closed and earthy on the nose, this intensely mineral wine benefits from time and aeration. There's a firm backbone of dusty slate and salt throughout, but patience coaxes out lovely hits of apple, apricot and lemon, too. It's a subtle but invigoratingly balanced wine with a lingering flint finish. Anna Lee C. Iijima
