Monowai 2017 Pinot Noir (Hawke's Bay)

A dollop of funk fills the nose at the start of this wine. The sweaty saddle notes do dissipate a little, revealing slightly soapy red- and black-berry fruit, anise and spice. Chalky in texture, wound firmly by drying tannins and finishing a little on the bitter side, this wine wants for much of the vibrancy and freshness of the variety. Christina Pickard
