This opens with scents reminiscent of ripe plum, dark culinary spice, balsamic notes and a whiff of espresso. The austere palate is vibrant but a bit lean in terms of fruit richness, offering dried cherry, licorice and coffee bean framed in bright acidity and assertive, close-grained tannins that grip the finish. Give it a few more years to come around then drink. Kerin O’Keefe
