Penfolds 2017 Yattarna Bin 144 Chardonnay (South Eastern Australia)

Penfolds's premium Chardonnay always walks a fine line between bright fruit and oak-lees influence. This vintage the oak feels a bit more prominent than in the past, particularly once the wine is open for a bit. It's high-end French oak, though, that adds toast and complexity to a myriad of other aromas and flavors: citrus, stone fruit, honeysuckle and salt with waxy, yeasty nuances. On the palate it glides along the tongue like water over river rocks. The acidity is like biting into a freshly picked apple, a flotation device for the opulence of this well-groomed, ageworthy wine. Drink now–2032. Christina Pickard
