Petaluma 2019 B&V Vineyard Shiraz (Adelaide)

This wine currently displays such an impenetrable wall of tannins and muscle that it's hard to see much else—a shame considering the cool-climate elegance for which the Adelaide Hills are known. The nose offers plump plum, berries, chocolate, dried herbs and white peppery spice, with a dusty, cola-like spine of oak. Those gargantuan tannins are chunky and drying, drowning out any fruit and freshness. Still in its infancy, the wine may just need time in bottle, but it's currently hard to tell in which direction it'll go. Christina Pickard
