Pietrafitta 1999 La Sughera Sangiovese (San Gimignano)

The smoked-meat and sugar-beet nose is not that opulent, but it's generally clean and welcoming. The palate offers your basic berry fruit mix, which is followed by a tight, mildly tannic finish with a long espresso-like tail. It's a solid if pedestrian wine that shouldn't disappoint the average red-wine drinker. —M.S. Michael Schachner
