Pyramid Valley 2018 Earth Smoke Pinot Noir (North Canterbury)

Pyramid Valley suffered a staggering 80% crop loss in 2018 due to weather. Earth Smoke is shy at first, but after time in glass it offers lovely wild strawberry, fresh cut rose, tea leaves, tar and woodsy spice amidst a slight meaty funk. The tannins are fine and sappy, with a firm grip that feels a touch bitter at the finish. The fruit is pure and present but overall this lacks the depth and fruit concentration of previous vintages.
