Hence the play on words, this is aiming to nod toward the Rhône stylistically, which it partially achieves in its emphasis on Christmas spice and earthy characters rather than ultraripe fruit. It's still packs in the South Aussie sunshine, though: mocha, plum and cherry with an underbelly of mint, bay leaf and clove. Rich and full bodied but with restraint, the palate is lined with granular, spice-filled tannins. It's a little woody on the finish, but overall is an appealing winter warmer wine. Christina Pickard

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
