Riposte 2018 The Dagger Pinot Noir (Adelaide Hills)

This vintage of the more affordable The Dagger wine from the Knappstein father and son team doesn't succeed as well as previous vintages. It's a bit reductive on the nose, simplifying the aromas into two simple categories of ripe cherry fruit and toasty, spicy oak. The palate feels equally muffled, the oak amplified into slight bitterness and the fruit a bit weighty. It's possible this is just in an awkward phase. It may need another year or two in bottle to find its way. Christina Pickard
