This fairly small-batch wine made by experienced winemaker Larry Cherubino from 50-year-old vines in Frankland River, is remarkably rich and broody compared to others in this relatively cool-climate region. It piles Dr Pepper-like oak spice on top of red berries, blackberries, savory herbs, iodine, white pepper and violets. The palate is plush and fruity but tightly wound by fine tannins. There's a bitter tinge at the finish. Drink now with decanter and protein nearby or hold until 2028. Christina Pickard
