Samogon

Some might be scared off by the cryptic label with brown Cyrillic lettering; others by the relatively high proof. But this “Russian grappa” is no firewater. Distilled from the grape pomace (seeds, stems, skins and residual juice) that remains after wine production, the final spirit has rounded, lingering grape sweetness plus pungent herbal notes reminiscent of caraway. Use for bloody Marys and other savory cocktails. Kara Newman
