Samuel Louis Smith 2019 Carmelita Pinot Noir (Monterey County)

Layers of raspberry sorbet, lavender and violet kick off the nose of this two-barrel bottling from Pelio Vineyard, which sits 1,000 feet above the Carmel Valley in shale and clay soils. The palate snaps with black raspberry and pomegranate flavors, as those floral touches lead through a wet stone minerality into a sagebrush finish. Matt Kettmann
