San Saba 1996 Merlot (Monterey County)

Shows why Monterey reds are still struggling to garner acclaim, with ample evidence of the dreaded "veggies"--the aromas are reminiscent of the marinated peppers at the local deli. It's too bad, because there's some rich, sweet fruit underneath and the mouthfeel is wonderfully plush. Joe Czerwinski
