Winemaker: Dewaldt Heyns. Black olive paste, mentholated rooibos, African violet petal and blackberry bramble form the bouquet of this complex and layered red. It's velvety on the palate, with plush black-fruit flavors and medium tannins that form a cohesive package. An additional glimmer of orange essence adds a unique pique of interest to the entry, while cocoa nib and black cherry-skin flavors fuel the finish. It's hard to resist now, but should mature well through 2029. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
