Schild Estate 2018 Shiraz (Barossa Valley)

This is a sturdy, full-bodied red that leads with a nose of cherry jam backed by myriad dried spices like mint and ground pepper. The palate is less luscious and ripe than the nose suggests, thanks to a line of lifted acidity to freshen the fruit. But without the plushness, the oak takes a leading role, drying out the muscular tannins and lingering long on the finish. Christina Pickard
