Simonsig 1998 Merindol Shiraz (Stellenbosch)

A funky (but decidedly characteristic South African) earth-meets-barbecue, “horsey” bouquet intrigued some reviewers, but puzzled others. The palate was similarly outdoorsy—earth, oak and herb enveloped the wine's sour red-fruit flavors. Finishes with tangy, dry wood.
