Winemaker: Johan Malan. A bit shy and reserved at first, this opens up with some time and air to reveal brooding sensations of black plum, cherry, forest floor, wood spice and a touch of mentholated herb. It's bold, dense and powerful on the palate, with gripping tannins and black fruit-skin flavors that fill the mouth and carry through to the lightly charred, spicy finish. Give this some more time in the cellar to truly shine; drink 2026–2029. Lauren Buzzeo

What Is Blind Tasting?

All tastings reported in the Buying Guide are performed blind. Typically, products are tasted in peer-group flights of from 5-8 samples. Reviewers may know general information about a flight to provide context—vintage, variety or appellation—but never the producer or retail price of any given selection. When possible, products considered flawed or uncustomary are retasted.
