Squawking Magpie 2017 Gimblett Gravels Syrah (Hawke's Bay)

Where oak on the Bordeaux blend from this producer seemed green and overpowering, in the Syrah it's better integrated, revealing itself in the form of Christmas spices or cocktail bitters—an orange rind, clove and dried herbal concoction. Generous helpings of currants and cedar are there, too. There's generosity on the palate as well. Silky and approachable, it coats the tongue with juicy berry fruit flavors, gentle tendrils of finely structured tannins falling around them. The spicy nuance carries through to the finish.
