Stone Old Guardian Barley Wine Style Ale 2014 Release

Cellar Selection

This annual release is always a stunner from Stone, best known for its affinity to produce beers that showcase a strong hop presence, so it's not surprising that the brewery would excel in this style category. Immediately attractive, the mahogany-amber colored beer offers aromas of banana bread, turbinado sugar, caramel malt, toffee, molasses and dried dark fruit that are all married to a core of citrusy hops. The mouthfeel is smooth and satisfying, with a rich orange-oil flavor that coats the palate and lingers long on the finish, ending moderately bitter and pithy. Enjoyable now, but should hold well through 2016, at least. Lauren Buzzeo
